H2 Hummer

Or I could just buy my Humer in Vancouver and pay over twice as much with km's that are also twice as much and save the hassle of importing a more yellow one.

Both ads were found on Craigslist the same evening with the same search criteria one in Vancouver and the other in San Diego.

1995 BMW M3 - White on black-Trade + cash?

Here is an interesting ad. You know that any ad that starts off with..."Before I describe this car let me begin by stating that I DO KNOW".... is going to be an interesting read and this one does not disapoint.

Here is a great car an authentic M series, the ultimate in BMW high performance. But to get to it you have to go through the owner and his issues, but I sense there is good value here.

2003 BMW 330i ZHP - price dropped!

Not an M series but the next best thing and it is affordable. Note the description of maintenance and how detailed it has been, a good thing when looking for a performance car. This is a good value car and then there is a bonus with the colour.

The ultimate Subaru

Here is a model that would suit just about any size of family. A Subaru on steroids.

Buying a Subaru in Seattle

Here is some info about importing a Subaru from a guy that used Carte Subaru.
note: He mentions that only two models are made in Japan and the rest, Outback included, are made in the US

Price of vehicle plus a 3 day test-drive permit for about $23 provided by dealership all converted from US to Cdn at the going rate.

Cost of wiring the money from my account to Carter Subaru was about $20 but this depends on your bank.

Duty of 6.1% on the total price (including cost of permit) in Cdn dollars. With Subaru this is on the Impreza and Forester as they are manufactured in Japan. Other Subarus are built in NA and are not subject to this duty.

$100 Cdn for air-conditioner excise tax GST of 6% calculated on the final number *after* the duty and the A/C excise tax.

PST of 7% (in British Columbia) when you insure the car. This is on the import amount only (the amount you paid duty on above, but not including duty like with GST).

Registrar fee of $206.70 to RIV at Cdn border for the paperwork and forms and such.

In addition to the driving permit you also need an "insurance binder" which is expensive ($77 for 10 days even though you only probably need 1 day) because you are insuring a vehicle not registered in BC. This gets you home from the dealership and that's it. You need separate insurance to get to the inspection centre (I used Canadian Tire). If you buy a day permit before your insurance binder runs out you can save some money as it will only cost you $12 for the basic coverage.

Inspection centre takes a cool $120 for doing who-knows-what on your brand new vehicle and giving you the stamp of approval.

And, yes, after all of that I still ended up saving 25% over the best price I could find in Canada (even having talked to an auto-broker who did a search for me).

Check out the "Most Watched Videos" section. Although it must have been done quite a while ago as the exchange rate that they use is over 17%. It is still very informative none the less.

Before leaving the US with your purchase.

Here are some details about the importation process from the US side. I found this on the Edmonds site at
http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef18c13/478

I picked out a relevant quote:
"I have imported cars twice through the Pac-Highway truck crossing(Vancouver). I simply phoned the US border office and asked them to fax me the proper form(import worksheet), I received back details of office hours and procedures along with the form. The American side demands three business days. Simply fax them the info, check that they received it and take a 3 days to get to the border. Pac-highway crossing for example states that you arrive no later than 3.30 pm at the American side. The Can. side is open I believe a bit later. Both offices handle vehicle exports Monday to Friday only"

More later.

Looking for a great car

Here is the first of many postings about searching for a great car in the US. I will be posting mainly links and photos from ads in the US for the purpose of purchasing a car to bring into Canada. I may from time to time ad a written post about my progress however the main goal is to catalog my results and have a place that I can return to easily to review my results. Another goal is to have the ability to share what I have come across with a few other people and a blog is the easiest way to do this, eliminating the need to call and email the latest find.
